About

The founder is the engineer. There is no bench.

Third Level IT is one person: me, Nate Howard. That's not a limitation to apologize for. It's the product.

Fifteen years inside the machine

I spent fifteen years as a network and security engineer at enterprise integrators, Presidio and Sentinel Technologies, designing, building, and fixing infrastructure for Fortune 500 environments. I've seen how the big shops work from the inside: the bench rotation, the revolving staff augmentation, the account manager between you and the person doing the work.

Third Level IT is what happens when you keep the engineering standard and delete everything else. No account managers. No bench. No junior tech learning on your network. When you call, you get the person who designed your network, because there is nobody else here.

I also wrote VIRP, an open infrastructure trust protocol, published through the IETF draft process as draft-howard-virp-06 E1 and reviewed by engineers I had never met. E2 The protocol and this firm run on the same rule: publish the claim, attach the evidence, invite the check.

“Your regulator doesn't grade effort. It grades evidence. I build infrastructure that produces it.”

Nate Howard, Founder and Principal Engineer

I'm based in Allen Park, Michigan. This website is hosted on our own infrastructure at our Southfield colocation facility, the same environment where our research and AI systems run. E3 I work onsite across Metro Detroit and serve clients nationally.

Method

How I work

  • Same engineer every visit. Continuity is the point. The person onsite this week is the person who was onsite last week and the person who answers the phone in between.
  • Plain-language deliverables a board can read. If the supervisory committee can't understand the report, the report isn't done.
  • Every conclusion backed by device output. Not vendor slides, not "should be fine." Configuration, logs, and test results.
  • The evidence file grows as controls close. By the time the examiner arrives, the binder already exists.

Facing an exam, an assessment, or a system nobody can prove?

Email or call. I'll tell you within one conversation whether I'm the right fit, and if I'm not, I'll point you to someone who is.
